Theres a lot of pressure on kids today to do things in summer that will help their resumes down the line and that will also be fun while broadening their horizons. Language immersion camps are excellent for some teens and they dont need to be honor roll students to learn from and enjoy the experience. The most popular of these type programs has always been for teenagers to become an exchange student for a summer, and while those are still popular, there are now camps devoted to languages. There are international camps based in Canada or in Europe, and they are run much like regular summer camps although they may be on college campuses or other institutions. Language study will be a part of all sorts of other activities like sports and sightseeing. This is great for kids between 8-18. There are high school and college based programs in Europe that dont involve home stays. Theres tremendous supervision and most kids come home from them very fluent in a new language and with some fun experiences to remember. If you dont really want your child abroad for part of the summer, there are plenty of cultural immersion camps in the United States. They are in all price ranges, and even the time periods can run from as short as two weeks to almost a full summer. It all depends on how much time the child wants to be there, and how much you want to spend. These types of summer academies all vary, and the process of selecting one should be a joint effort between you and your child. Its necessary for every child to have some time off for sports and other activities and you want to make certain they get them. |
