Academic Camps - Are They Still Summer Camp? Print E-mail

Even the words academic camp sound so serious, and there are kids who think that way, but they shouldnt. Academic camps are a great way to catch up if a student has fallen behind as well as being good for kids who want a head start on gaining an edge during college admissions.

Most academic camps are held on college campuses and are far from feeling like just an extension of school. The instructors know its camp time, and make it fun. Kids get some critical thinking skills going on, and start learning more advanced note taking, and study techniques. They can also explore areas that are available to them in their regular school, and that excites some of them. They can practice living independently which is one more step toward college, and they ca work on leadership skills too. You would think that these camps would be full of over achievers and thats hardly the case. The kids who seem to like them and do best at them are ones with poor self-esteem, lack of motivation and not so good grades. If these camps work for them, it tends to last the whole school year. Most all of these camps offer a lot of fun stuff just like traditional camps so theres no reason to worry that theyre missing out on normal summer fun!

Academic camps are terrific to get the motivation back into a childs life, and somehow it works out better when you are there coaching and urging them. Its a great time for them to do it on their own, and come home feeling like they accomplished something good.
