When To Look At Summer Camp Options Print E-mail

Ideally, you would start to look at summer camp options for your child during the summer - before! But since thats not usually something anyone wants to think about a year in advance, the best time is in the middle of winter when the weather is lousy, and theres some time to sit with books and the computer, and you and your child go through the options.

Not only is the timing right, but it will give you a chance to have a number of conversations about what kinds of camps, how long and all sorts of other issues dealing with a summer partially away from home. The fact is that most camps start pushing for booking the autumn before but unless you are determined to get a spot in a specific camp, thats a little early. Do know that lower cost and non-profit camps book up first so if one of those is something you were thinking about, you need to move early. Every camp has limited spaces to know that most are sold out before spring. Early booking - and paying - also has the advantage that there may be a good discount, and if you can afford to pay early, do so. Letting your child be a part of the process is a learning experience for both of you, and you might end up surprised at the type of camps he or she is interested in. What you might have chosen on your own could have ended up being a disaster of an experience for your child, and you wouldnt have known.

Look at all the options because it may be that your child wants to do something academic rather than sports oriented or vice versa. Start looking at camps through the American Camping Association or surf camp sites and then check their credentials through the ACA.
